How To Change Your Mouse Speed in Windows 10

January 11, 2021 by Richard Phillips Leave a Comment

The present generation has shifted from a computer to a laptop. The use of a computer has stopped because people now do not sit in one place and work. They continuously have to travel, and computers are not mobile, they are stationary and cannot be carried everywhere. The use of laptops has increased tremendously over the past few years because it is a flexible and easy option to carry with you wherever you go.

Many people switching from a computer to a laptop experience difficulty using the laptop’s touchpad in the starting. Even after using it for a while, they are not really comfortable with the touchpads as they are sensitive and sometimes they become slow enough or often stop working with extensive usage.  A preferable option uses a wireless mouse that is portable and can be carried along with the laptop.

Connecting the mouse to a laptop is also very easy and increases the productivity of work. Selecting the correct mouse according to the desired work is extremely important. Wired and wireless mouse both options are available. Gamers mainly used a wired mouse because it gives them smoothness and enhances the gaming experience. Wireless mice mainly work on Bluetooth or USB technology. It is also important to check the shape of the mouse and then buy it.

A Guide to Change Your Mouse Speed in Windows 10

Many people find it comfortable to use the mouse with their fingers, while some prefer to rest their palms on it. Apart from these factors, one very important feature is the speed of the mouse. No one prefers to use a mouse that is dead slow.

There is a DPI or dots per inch rating feature with sensitivity, which has to be known to the user to operate the mouse according to the needs. The higher the DPI rating, the more sensitive it is. A DPI of 800 to 2000 is usually apt for many of the users performing daily basis tasks.

Despite that, some people will be surprised to know that the mouse’s speed can be changed and enhanced in Windows 10. A user has to just follow a series of sequential steps to do so.

Method 1: Change Your Mouse Speed from Settings

Step 1: Open settings using Win + I keys on the keyboard.

It will be visible on the extreme left side by clicking the windows icon.

Step 2: Go to the devices option

Under this option, you will see Bluetooth, Printers, and Mouse.

An arrow pointing to the devices option is marked.

Step 3: Click the mouse option.

This option will be found on the left-hand side column which is pointed out by the black arrow.

Step 4: Basic Mouse Settings

Under the mouse option, there will be some settings that you can do. For instance, One can change the mouse scrolling speed and line length.

Step 5: Additional mouse settings

Additional mouse options will be available under related settings which can be found on the extreme right side.

Step 6: Mouse properties

Under the mouse properties, you can find a buttons tab option. The double click option speed that you do from your mouse is controlled by changing the slider from slow to fast according to your need. The buttons option is pointed by a black arrow and the speed setting is pointed by a blue arrow for the easy understanding to the user.

Step 7: Mouse properties – Pointer options

This option is available in line with the buttons options. Under this, the user can select pointer speed according to his or her convenience. The slider has to be moved more towards left if the slow speed is desirable and towards the right if fast speed is needed. Also, to enhance pointer precision, the checkbox has to be ticked.  Arrows have been marked for convenience.

Step 8: Press OK

After all the necessary changes are made, click on the OK option which is available just below the mouse properties.

All the modifications will then be saved and can be recorrected at any time according to the user’s wish.

Method 2: Use Registry to Change Mouse Speed

There is also another option through which mouse settings can be changed. It is the Windows Registry option. This option is not advisable to all because it is a bit tedious. Therefore only those users that are comfortable with it can do so. Despite that, Steps are mentioned below to make it easy for all which can be followed.

Step 1: Open run

Press Ctrl+R on your keyboard to open the Run dialog box. Type Regedit in the space provided below. Then click on  OK. Follow the screenshot for a better understanding.

Step 2: Registry Navigation Menu

This can be found on the extreme left-hand side. To check for the registry entries, follow the following path. KEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Mouse.

Step 3: Mouse Sensitivity

In the registry entries, on option is that of MouseSensitivity. When you double-click it, value data will pop-up. You can set any value up to 20.

Step 4: Other 3 important options

For the precision of the cursor movements, three options are present which can be used. They are Mouse Speed, Mouse Threshold 1, and Mouse Threshold 2. They are also available within the registry entries. The Mouse movement will double when the value of Mouse Speed is equal to or greater than Mouse Threshold 1 and quadruple of the  Mouse Threshold 2 value. You can find the screenshot below.

Step 5: Winding up.

Once done, close the registry editor. Do not worry as the changes will be implemented automatically.

Hence this way the mouse speed can be changed according to the user. And hence the user does not have to worry much about which mouse he brings from the store as basic functions can be optimized pertaining to the wish.
