How To Fix Audio Service is Not Running Issue in Windows 10

The error called Audio Service is not running is a common warning message from the Windows system. This windows audio error indicates that the sound delivering service is stopped, and it can’t be started automatically. The audio services not responding error is frustrating because you can’t hear any audio or sound from the headphones or speakers while playing media files.

Many Windows OS users get this audio error in which clicking on the Sound icon, the taskbar depicts a red X mark on the bottom-right side. The error message The Audio Service is not running is displayed while pointing the mouse over the speaker or sound icon in the Windows taskbar.

This audio error was getting popular in Windows 7, but nowadays, all Windows versions are getting this error of windows audio service stopping or audio services not responding. In most cases, the Windows Audio service and its dependencies are the main culprits of this windows audio error. Sometimes, these services related to audio or sound stop simultaneously or fail to start automatically while booting up the computer. So if one or more audio service isn’t running on the windows, this audio error is inevitable. Sometimes the error called windows could not start the windows audio service on the local computer is displayed with the error code as 0x8007005 due to some driver or startup issues.

Solutions for Audio Service is not running error

Before applying any audio service related solution from below, try restarting or rebooting your PC or laptop in normal or safe mode to see if the audio service is running or not. If the Windows Audio Service continuously fails on every restart of your PC, you need to follow the below solutions and fixes to get your system’s audio services up and running.

Solution 1: Try restarting the Audio services

Ensure the Windows Audio Service and its dependencies are set to start automatically while booting up your PC or computer.

1. Invoke the Run dialog box by either pressing Windows + R keys simultaneously or from the Start menu.

2. Type in services.msc in the opened Windows Run dialog box.

3. Find out Windows Audio service and select Restart after right-clicking on it.

4. Find out Windows Audio Endpoint Builder and select Restart after right-clicking on it.

5. Opt for Plug and Play and select Restart after right-clicking on it.

6. Confirm if the Audio service is not running error is resolved or not.

Solution 2: Modify Windows Audio Services settings

Below are some Windows Audio Services related settings and configurations which may solve some audio issues.

1. Open the Windows Run dialog box by either pressing Windows + R keys simultaneously or from the Start menu.

2. Type in services.msc in the opened Windows Run dialog box.

3. Find the Windows Audio service and select its Properties after right-clicking on it.

4. Make sure the Startup type of this audio service is set to Automatic in this Windows Audio Properties window.

If not, set the Startup type of Windows Audio service to Automatic and click on Apply > OK.

5. Similarly, change the Startup types of below services to Automatic by following the above-mentioned steps.

  • Windows Audio Endpoint Builder
  • Multimedia Class Scheduler

6. Try playing your multimedia (audio/video) to check if the audio is working on both or not.

Solution 3: Increase or decrease the volume or sound of your computer

Sometimes the Windows Audio service shows some error due to minor glitches. You can try decreasing or increasing your system’s volume or sound using the volume slider or other settings.

1. Click on the speaker icon or sound logo on the taskbar.

2. Try decreasing or increasing the sound using the slider.

3. Try opening any audio/video file to check if the audio issue is fixed or not.

Solution 4: Utilizing Windows Troubleshooter

1. Choose the control panel on your Windows machine either from the Cortona search box or from the Run Dialogue box and open it.

2. Click on small icons and then select the Troubleshooting option from all control panel items.

5. Click Next on the popped up window of Playing Audio.

6. Follow the Audio troubleshooting wizard steps after the scanning is finished.

Solution 5: Check and update your Audio drivers

Outdated, incompatible, or corrupted audio drivers can cause the error of windows audio service stopping. Follow on to properly update the Sound or Audio drivers on your Windows computer.

1. Open Device Manager of your windows either from the Start menu or by typing in the keywords called devmgmt.msc in the Run dialog box.

2. Search for the option called Audio Inputs and outputs and expand it.

3. Select Speaker’s Properties after clicking on the Speakers.

4. Head over to your speaker’s Driver tab and click on the Uninstall option.

5. After rebooting your PC, Windows will automatically install the compatible and latest audio drivers for your system.

Try checking your system’s audio status and observe if the audio error is resolved or not.
